Have you ever wondered why wineries describe each of their wines as tasting like something totally unrelated to a grape? Apples, blackberries, leather, earthy?? Wine smells (and tastes) like virtually every fruit in the book, except for grapes! When it comes to wine, it’s our olfactory abilities that allow us to discern the sheer variety of flavors that are offered up in a sip of wine. Aroma refers to the smells unique to the grape variety - lychee aromas of Gewürztraminer, petroleum essence of Riesling, barnyardy smell in French Pinot Noir. Learn what Somms look for to detect varietals of wine.
